Buttermilk Biscuits
We southerners sure love our biscuits. While my grandmother never wrote down her recipe for us to use 😉 she had it memorized! I have tried and tested quite a few and these are a home run. They are easy enough to make on a lazy Saturday morning but always have beautiful, flaky layers. Another fun thing about this recipe, is you can make several batches ahead, freeze the dough and bake them from frozen, anytime you have a hankering for biscuits!

Buttermilk Biscuits

- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp table salt
- 3/4 tsp baking soda
- 5 T butter I freeze mine for a few minutes
- 4 T shortening
- 3/4 - 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
-
Mix all dry ingredients together with a fork, in a wide, large mixing bowl.
-
Grate the frozen butter (with a large grater) into the bowl. Add shortening. Next, "cut" in the butter & shortening with your fork until the mixture is crumbly.
-
Pour buttermilk into the middle of the bowl & blend biscuits until a somewhat sticky dough has formed.
-
Prepare surface with flour & roll out your biscuit dough until about 3/4" thick.
-
Place biscuits on a baking sheet & bake for about 12 - 15 minutes or until golden brown.
